Dry Sensitive Skin Care from Trillium Laser
Dry skin occurs when insufficient sebum or oil is secreted. Skin texture is rough and may be flaky with a dull appearance. Dry skin is more prone to wrinkles with age. Dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures.
Characteristics of dry, sensitive skin are:
- Small pores
- Low surface shine
- Thin skin texture
- Overall skin feels dry and tight
- Prone to redness and broken capillaries

Aging Skin Care from Trillium Laser
The two most commonly encountered determinants of aging are
- chronological aging, which is the natural progression of genetic determinants.
- photo-aging, which is the result of exposure to solar radiation.
Other environmental conditions such as exposure to wind and cold can also have effects on skin condition over time.
Sun exposure (ultraviolet radiation, UVR) is by far the most influential environmental factor affecting skin aging. Many changes associated with chronological aging are accelerated by ultraviolet radiation, such as collagen and elastin degradation. Sun effects on the epidermis actually cause irregular thickening rather than thinning, which is expected with chronological aging. Melanocytes proliferate, and melanin production increases as the skin “tans” to defend itself against the effects of radiation. In older individuals, exposure to UVR induces discrete areas of melanocyte proliferation, appearing externally as “age spots”, also called solar lentigines. Tiny surface capillaries dilate, becoming visible as reddened spots, are referred to as Telangiectasis. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation drastically increases the risk of skin cancers.
The typical external characteristics of aging skin are:
- Fine wrinkles (loss of collagen and elastin)
- Sagging, thinner skin (loss of adipose tissue in the subcutis as well as dermal changes)
- Deepened lines and expression
- Dry skin (reduced keratinocyte turnover and sebum production)
- Age spots (sun exposure)

Irritable/Sensitive Skin Care from Trillium Laser
Irritable skin, also characterized as sensitive skin, can affect dry and oily skin types, causing a range of reactions based on the skin’s own chemical components or antigens that may react with a product’s chemicals. Skin is clinically characterized as sensitive when it reacts on a predictable basis to an element or ingredient.
This skin type reacts to heat, wind, friction or cold. It commonly reacts to external variables. It is a skin condition that has a lower tolerance to certain products.
Sensitivity manifests itself as redness, itching, burning, blotchiness, and in some cases small pustules. Individuals with irritable skin must use gentle products with anti-irritating and immuno-stimulating ingredients known to reduce inflammation and prevent free radical reactions.
Treatment strategy for sensitive skin falls into two categories:
1) The first strategy is to reduce the initial insult to the skin. In the case of cleansing products, this means ensuring they are mild as possible, yet still effective.
2) The second strategy is to ensure that the product does not damage the stratum corneum barrier. Moisturizing ingredients, lipids and other compounds may be helpful in reinforcing the vital shield.
Rosacea
A skin condition often associated with irritable skin is Rosacea. It is a chronic disorder of the face that affects people middle aged and older, individuals with fair skin, as well as those genetically predisposed to the condition through family appearance of telangiestases, central facial edema, stinging, burning and roughness or scaling. It is considered a form of acne.
Clinical manifestation of rosacea is:
- Transient vascular dilation with varying erythema
- Blushing is most often involved
- Papules and pustules follow
Factors that trigger Rosacea are:
- Alcohol
- Spicy foods
- Stress
- Female hormones
- Allergies
- Medications
- Anything that may increase blood flow to the face
Hyperpigmented Skin Care from Trillium Laser
Hyperpigmented skin (excess pigment or increased melanocytes) may occur as a result of sun exposure (solar lentigines), hormone fluctuation (melasma), freckles, nevus (mole or beauty mark), chronic dermatitis and cancer.
Pigmentation problems result from abnormal pigment production by the melanocyte cells and an uneven distribution of melanin over the skin surface. Melanin acts as a filter, protecting the skin from the harmful effect of the sun’s radiation and appears as brown discoloration in the skin. Tanning of the skin is the body’s response to protect itself against internal skin damage from UV light. When melanocytes produce greater amounts of pigment than can be absorbed by the keratin cells, melanin clusters develop, as in the case of age spots. Melasma occurs as a result of hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, or menopause. Brown spots can also occur as a result of surface irritation caused by acne, wounding, or chemical sensitivity. Pigment correcting treatments inhibit tyrosinase enzymes responsible for melanin production, and simultaneously remove cells that contain abnormal amounts of melanin.
Oily or Acne-prone Skin Care from Trillium Laser
Oily or acne-prone skin tends to “shine” with excess oil secretions and has a coarse texture. This is especially true of the “T-zone”, the area of the forehead, nose and chin. Pores tend to be larger causing the collection of debris leading to blackhead formation. Skin has a general thick texture and feels moist and greasy. Oil- and alcohol-free astringents help control excess oil. Water-based moisturizers and make-up are suggested rather than oil-based products.
Oily or acne-prone skin is characterized by:
- Skin that commonly goes through break-out phases
- Can be increased by stress, fatigue and hormonal fluctuations
- Suffers from blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules
- Skin type is usually considered oily
