Botox Injections

BOTOX® is a purified protein that works by blocking overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions. BOTOX Cosmetic® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Botox injections are a safe, nonsurgical procedure which simply relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkling. A tiny amount of botox Cosmetic is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic wrinkles. When Botox Cosmetic® is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away. Although the results are dramatic, it will not radically change your facial appearance. Your facial expressions will be just as natural, but without wrinkles or creases between your brows or around your eyes. Botox injections are priced per unit, the amount of injection units required will be determined by the doctor or nurse at the time of your assessment. The effects of Botox Cosmetic® treatment usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox Cosmetic® may begin to last longer. Botox® has been licensed in Canada since 1990 as a safe and effective treatment for a number of disorders caused by overactive muscles, including children as young as 2 years old to treat cerebral palsy. In 2001, Health Canada approved Botox Cosmetic® for wrinkle therapy and it has been proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.

Botox® for Hyperhidrosis

Now, Botox® Therapeutic is successfully and safely used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), tension headaches, migraines, TMJ syndrome and spasmodic muscle pain. Botox® Therapeutic has shown efficacy rates as high as 80% in many clinical trials for the treatment of these conditions. Hyperhidrosis is the medical term given to the condition commonly known as excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis is caused by the over stimulation of sweat glands by the autonomic nerves. Botox® for hyperhidrosis has been proven to be effective in decreasing both palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis (sweating of the armpits, hands, and feet) by blocking the release of the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. An injection to the affected area may provide relief from excessive sweat within one week of your treatment, for three months up to one year. Botox for hyperhidrosis is the only prescription medicine for excessive underarm sweating that has been approved by Health Canada.

Botox® for TMJ

The joint on both sides of the head where the jawbone meets the skull is called the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). TMJ syndrome occurs when this joint becomes overworked due to excessive teeth grinding or clenching of the teeth, and may result in tension headaches, jaw clicking or extreme pain in the jaw. Botox® for TMJ is injected into the muscles that control the often involuntary movements of the joint and causes them to relax, alleviating your TMJ symptoms. Many people experience relief with two weeks, but it may take longer to get the full benefit of the treatment.
