How Laser Hair Removal Works

The laser removes hair by selectively targeting the pigment of the hair inside each follicle. Each “pulse” of the laser light takes less than a second to disable large numbers of hair follicles, without damaging the surrounding tissue. Our diverse laser hair removal equipment allows us to treat all skin types easily and effectively.

What Lasers are Safe for my Skin Color?

At Trillium Laser and Antiaging Clinic we have 3 of the absolute best and most recognized medical grade lasers on the market. For lighter skin types (l-lV), we use the Light Sheer Diode, a globally recognized gold standard laser hair removal technology. LightSheer is clinically documented and proven to deliver results, and effectively treats the broadest patient population. The system safely treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick I–lV), including tanned skin. High power and unique output control enable treatment of nearly any hair diameter or hair color. With thousands of units in the field, LightSheer has become the most popular photoepilation system in the world.

We also offer the best available technology for darker skin types (lV-Vl). We use only the best when it comes to our equipment and are happy to introduce the Apogee Elite. The Apogee Elite is a medical grade laser hair removal machine. The Elite removes unwanted hair with unsurpassed efficacy and client comfort. It’s revolutionary technology combines two optimal wavelengths in one system: the 755-nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser. This allows us to treat any skin type safely and effectively as well as change between two wavelengths during a single treatment. The Apogee elite also safely treats unwanted spider veins as well as sun spots and other pigmented lesions.

Before Your Procedure

We will discuss your “before treatment” plan during your initial consultation. At this time one of our specialists will determine your skin type and the laser best suited to your needs and expectation. We have you fill out a medical history and go through what you should expect in the coming months. Most patients do not require special preparation before treatment.

During Your Procedure

Laser hair removal is very effective and when performed by trained medical personnel, is very safe. At Trillium our Laser Hair Removal is performed by a trained specialist. You will be asked to expose the area being treated and the area will be shaved (if not already done by the patient). A thin layer of protectant gel will be applied to the skin. This helps to keep the skin cool during treatment. The Laser will be applied to the area and you may feel a warm sensation in the area or feel what some patients describe as an elastic band snapping. It is also common to notice the smell of burnt hair in the room. These are all normal signs and good indications the laser is doing it’s job. Laser hair removal treatments are normally not long procedures. Face areas are done in 15 to 20 minutes, underarms and bikini lines take roughly the same amount of time, while larger areas such as backs and both legs take approximately 60-90 minutes.

After Your Procedure

In most cases there is no special care required after your laser treatment. The treated areas may appear slightly pink, perhaps a little inflamed, but only for the first few hours after your treatment. You may wish to apply a topical ointment to soothe the skin. A minimum SPF 30 should be applied to the treated areas. Your technician will provide more details on any specific care you may require.
